Organize Your Information
To further the ‘story’ analogy, the next step would be to identify
our chapters. Once an identity is finalized and colors are chosen, the
next step is to identify what information the site needs to display or
convey.
For this we create a sensible taxonomy, or hierarchy of
information.
For example, if your business sells widgets, this is the
point at which you would break down the variety of widgets you sell and
categorize them accordingly. The ultimate purpose it to sort your
information in a clear way so that it can later be found and displayed
effectively.
This is a necessary step for larger any site, but absolutely crucial
for sites that may have hundreds or thousands of products or services.
Imagine if Amazon.com didn’t have product categories and everything was
randomly displayed on every page! Typical site taxonomy can simply be
a bulleted list with multiple levels of indentation – or
sub-categorization.
