Wired LAN Configuration

A Home Wired LAN is basically a local network of computers which are connected together by way of cables. In the past, creating a Home Wired LAN was something that was rather difficult  to do and required an equally profound level of technical knowledge. Nowadays due to the popularity of applications which make use of home networks as well as the need to share all-important Internet access, home networks have become simpler and can be easily set up if you are aware of what you need and if you can follow simple instructions which tell you exactly what to do.

When it comes to what you need, you probably have to first start off with the  CAT 3 and CAT 5 Ethernet patch cables with switched pairs. These are the most common kind of home network cables, there are other more expensive options but these are the ones which are used for home networks. After this you should also make sure that you have  a Network Interface Card  with a RJ 45  jack on all the computers which you wish to connect - these are pretty much standard in all new laptops and desktops.  In case your computers don't you'll have purchase and get them installed.  If building out a modern home network, you want to ensure that you buy Gigabit capable hardware.  While the additional throughput isn't always necessary, the increasing use of network based backup devices - or Network Acessible Storage - and media streaming options will make you glad you did.

Basically there are three kinds of home wired networks and they are the Hub network, the Crossover network and the Router network. The kind of network that you end up choosing actually depends on how many computers you need to connect and what they will be used for.

A Hub network consists of  a hub  and computers which are connected to that hub by means of Ethernet cables. Usually such networks are best suited for connections which are used for file and printer sharing.  A Crossover networkWired Home LAN is created when two devices are directly connected to each other by means of a single crossover cable. A crossover cable can be purchased at a computer store or made from a standard Ethernet cable if you have the technical know-how. A standard Crossover network has a maximum of two computers and is mostly used for file sharing, playing video games or printing.

The Router network  is one which easily permits connected computers to share an Internet connection by using a router. While one cable is connected to a cable or DSL modem via the WAN port other Ethernet cables connect from the RJ45 ports on the router to the various computers on the home network. This network is the most expensive to set up but the most versatile as well
